Queer States: A Symposium Introduction, 10/22/11

This symposium brought together scholars and critics to discuss a variety of themes connected to the exhibition Queer State(s). Participants from the UT community include Lisa Moore, Associate Professor of English; Ixchel Rosal, Director of the Gender and Sexuality Center; Risa Puleo, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Blanton Museum of Art; and Andy Campbell and Chelsea Weathers, both PhD candidates in Art History. In addition, other participants included Nathan Lee, an independent curator and critic from New York, Leah Devun, a Faculty Fellow at Stanford University and an Associate Professor of History at Rutgers University, and Jonathan D. Katz, director of the Doctoral Program in Visual Studies at the University at Buffalo and co-founder of the activist group Queer Nation, San Francisco and the Queer Caucus of the College Art Association. Co-Presented by The Gender and Sexuality Center and The Queer Students Alliance, UT Austin Generous support for Queer State(s) comes from the Ford Foundation. The Gender and Sexuality Center provides safe spaces for all members of the UT Austin community to explore, organize, and promote learning around issues of gender and sexuality. The center also facilitates a greater responsiveness to the needs of women and the LGBTQ communities through education, outreach and advocacy. The mission of the Queer Students Alliance (QSA) is to foster leadership within lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer communities at the University of Texas at Austin. The QSA advocates on behalf of the needs of LGBTQ students, hosts community-wide events and acts as a forum for the exchange of communication and ideas among all LGBTQ organizations at UT Austin. In conjunction with Mika Tajima's exhibition The Architect's Garden, Dr. Nancy Kwallek used the designs of Alexander Girard and Florence Knoll, designers from Herman Miller, Inc. and Knoll International, as examples to discuss the impact of color on our senses. This lecture offers the public a look into discussions between Dr. Kwallek and Mika Tajima on interior design, architecture, and modernism. Filmmaker Richard Linklater and artist Mika Tajima discussed slackers, flânurs, and the history of refusal, an element in Tajima’s exhibition The Architect's Garden and in Linklater’s influential 1991 film Slacker. The exhibition and program were organized by Aimee Chang, manager of public programs at the Blanton Museum of Art. The discussion was co-presented by the Blanton Museum of Art.
